About Us

About the Club

Harrisburg Area Flying Society (HAFS) is a club established solely for the purpose of flying model aircraft on a purely recreational basis.  It has been a successful part of the local community since first organized in 1979.  The club is run 100% by volunteer club members.

The mission is to provide the best possible flying site to its members, provide an opportunity to improve modeling skills, and ensure community acceptance of radio control flying in a safe and controlled manner.

Flying Field and Facility

Our flying field consists of a 650 foot long rolled grass runway.  It is arguably one of the best flying sites in central Pennsylvania.  It is well maintained and we have plenty of parking for cars, trailers, and RV’s for special events.

Directions

From Rt 81, exit off the Progress Avenue exit.  Take Progress avenue South to Elmerton Ave.  Turn Right on Elmerton and the club is approximately 1 mile on the left, just past the PA Fish and Game Commission headquarters and PA State Police.  An American Flag and a wind sock can be viewed from the road (wind sock only from November to April).  A map is also posted on our "Contact Us" page.

 GPS Coordinates:        40.292274, -76.866105

Spectators

We welcome spectators any time there are club members present. Our field is private property and remains closed to visitors except when active club members are flying. For safety reasons, please stay behind the white cable if you are not a club member.  Signs are marked along the spectator safety line.  No dogs are allowed on the field.

Flight Training

We offer free flight training for new pilots or youth that want to learn to fly.  Please stop at a meeting or inquire at the field.

Events

From time to time, the club holds special events.  Those events are published on flyers and also are posted from time to time on this website.

Flying Hours

Flying is generally available every day.  Certain exceptions and time restrictions on engine running and other conditions apply.  Club members are provided with those details at the time of membership, and they are also posted at the field, and on the IMPORTANT INFO page of this website.

Giant Scale Flying

Yes, we fly giant scale within engine size limits.  Certain time restrictions and other requirements apply which are posted at the field.  We do not allow turbine powered Jets.

Meetings

General Membership meetings are held normally the first Monday of each month, at 7PM at the flying field.  General membership meetings are not held in December, January, or February.  In the event of any changes to the meeting, members are notified by email in advance.

Membership

We welcome new members.  Prospective members must first become a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).  This is required for insurance and other purposes, and is mandatory with no exceptions.

After you have your AMA membership, you can complete the club application found on this website and mail with your dues, a copy of your AMA membership card, and a self-addressed stamped envelope to return your membership card in, after you have been accepted into the club.   You will be contacted within 30 days or sooner after we receive your application and accompanying AMA information.
